Book cover design and sculpture for Haruki Murakami's novel 1Q84.
In the novel 1Q84, the female protagonist is inside the story that the male protagonist is writing. Though it is surreal and even dangerous, she feels safe and warm to be so close to the story in his heart. She lives inside his paper heart. I created this piece by sewing a fragile, paper sculpture. Lighting creates the warm feeling of this object, and veins, to remind us it is a living membrane. Since this is a well known novel, I wanted to approach a remake of it's cover from an entirely new direction, and something I felt highlighted the sensation at the core of the story.
